At the beginning of 2017, as one of its priorities for the year, the Law Reform Commission gave the office the task of looking into the issue of juvenile justice in Vanuatu and taking the first steps in helping creating a Juvenile Justice Act, as Vanuatu is currently lacking one.
With the increase of cases involving juveniles, the Commission felt it was imperative that an Act be established to help deal with juveniles and ensure that their best interests is catered for along with other factors. The office of the Law Reform Commission began work on this in March with its first step being the writing up of an Issues Paper, discussing all the issues related to juvenile justice.
Currently, the office is working towards finalizing this Issues Paper which should be available for public viewing at the end of November.
